Although rising prices and high vehicle loan interest rates are slowing sales, the three top-selling vehicles in 2023 and so far in 2024 are pickup trucks. No. 2 on the list was Chevrolet’s Silverado, and after living with a top-trim High Country version for a week, its popularity is understandable. It delivers everything one could ask for in a full-size pickup.

We were most surprised by its luxury-vehicle comfort and refinement, and its road feel and handling. Our High Country’s 6.2-liter V-8 engine was another plus. One of four Silverado powerplant offerings, it generates 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s enough power for sub-5.5 second 0-60 launches and a max tow rating of 13,300 pounds (no, that’s not a typo).

The least expensive Silverado lists for under $38,000, but the High Country starts at around $65k. One equipped like ours will set you back about $74k.

 Hits:
- Offers an impressive combination of power, comfort, and surprisingly good handling, along with exceptional towing and cargo-carrying capabilities.

- This Silverado sounds a lot like a Corvette when it’s in Sport mode, thanks to its valve-actuating active exhaust system.

-The back seat offers limo-like room.

Misses:
- This is a big truck that can make climbing in and out a bit challenging for smaller people, even with its side rails.

- Like competitors’ full-size pickups, Silverado pricing starts fairly low but climbs quickly with options and trim levels.

- You’ll pay at the pump to drive this beauty. EPA fuel economy rating is 15/20/17 mpg city/hway/combined… and it runs on premium.
