There’s a reason you see so many Subarus on New England’s roads. They’re
hard-working, dependable, and do many things well. The Subaru Ascent
typifies that. Subaru’s first practical three-row vehicle - the B9 Tribeca was too
small – the Ascent debuted as a 2019 model. The only significant change for
the 2024 model we tested is a new eight-passenger seating availability on the
Base and Premium trims. Our test vehicle came in top-of-the-line Touring trim
with a sticker price of $49,931, including destination/delivery and optional all-
weather floor liners ($141).
The Ascent is available in eight trim levels, beginning at $34,400. Subaru’s
vaunted AWD system is standard across the board. New Englanders should
love that… especially from, say, November to April. The frugal residents of the
region should also appreciate that the Ascent is one of the most affordable
three-row crossovers you can buy.
Hits:
- A versatile performer that delivers a nice balance of comfort, handling, ease
of operation, and great visibility.
- A top safety pick built on a solid platform loaded with standard safety
features such as blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and
emergency braking.
- The Ascent is one of eight Subaru models recommended by Consumer
Reports, which named Subaru the Best Mainstream Automotive Brand for
2024 (based on reliability, safety, owner satisfaction, and road-test
evaluations).
Misses:
- Some controls require digging through menus in the 11.6-inch tablet style
infotainment screen.
- Not quite as roomy for passengers or cargo as some of its competitors.
- Although it’s has one of the best-shifting and least conspicuous CVTs, it’s
still a CVT.
